Lead editorial delivery and shape stories that amplify Romany, Traveller and Roma voices across the UK

The Board of Trustees and Managing Director of Travellers Times Charity are seeking an inspiring and hands-on Editor to lead our editorial output across print and digital platforms.

For over 20 years, Travellers Times was published by Rural Media, and has provided a trusted platform for Romany, Traveller and Roma communities to tell their own stories, celebrate their culture and achievements, challenge stereotypes, and influence public understanding and policy. Now, as a fully independent Travellers Times Charity entering an exciting new phase, we are looking for a dedicated Editor who shares our commitment to social justice, community empowerment, and high-quality storytelling, ensuring that community voices remain at the absolute heart of our work.

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to provide editorial leadership and hands-on production management for a unique national publication with deep community roots.

Reporting to the Managing Director and Board of Trustees, the Editor will be a key practitioner in a small, close-knit team. You will lead the day-to-day delivery of our magazine, website, and digital content, ensuring all output is ethically produced, legally compliant, and truly reflective of the diverse experiences of Romany, Traveller, and Roma communities. Rather than just managing from afar, you will work directly with our staff, freelance contributors, and volunteers, acting as both an editor and a mentor.

We are looking for someone who can:

  • Provide editorial oversight and lead the production of the Travellers Times magazine, website, and digital platforms.
  • Research, uncover, and write original news stories, features, and articles.
  • Review, line-edit, and proofread submitted copy, preserving the authentic voices of our contributors.
  • Support, mentor, and guide community reporters and content creators to develop their skills.
  • Manage editorial workflows efficiently to ensure all publication schedules are met.
  • Ensure all published content complies with media law, GDPR, and safeguarding requirements.
  • Maintain a central focus on Romany, Traveller, and Roma participation in all editorial planning.

Essential Experience

You will bring:

  • Proven experience working as an Editor, Sub-Editor, or Senior Journalist across both print and digital platforms.
  • Outstanding writing, line-editing, and proofreading skills, with a keen eye for tone, grammar, and style.
  • Experience of supporting, managing, or coordinating diverse contributors, including freelancers and volunteers.
  • A strong working knowledge of media law (libel, copyright), ethical journalism, and GDPR.
  • Excellent organisational and time-management skills, with a track record of meeting production deadlines.
  • A commitment to equality, inclusion, and community empowerment.
  • An understanding of the issues affecting Romany, Traveller, and Roma communities, or a willingness to develop this understanding quickly.

Desirable

We would particularly welcome candidates with:

  • Lived experience of being from a Romany, Traveller, or Roma community.
  • Experience in delivering informal training, writing workshops, or skills development.
  • Skills in digital content creation, photography, or multimedia storytelling.
  • Experience working within the charity, voluntary, or community-led sectors.

Why Join Us?

Travellers Times is more than a publication. We are a platform for community voices, a champion of cultural heritage, and an advocate for equality and social justice.

By joining us, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Shape the editorial voice of a respected national charity.
  • Work directly with communities whose voices are often marginalised in mainstream media.
  • Help people build the skills and confidence to tell their own stories.
  • Work within a passionate, supportive, and community-focused team.
  • Help strengthen representation, understanding, and opportunity for Romany, Traveller, and Roma people across the UK.

Equality and Inclusion

Travellers Times is committed to creating an organisation that reflects the diversity of the communities we serve. We actively encourage applications from Romany, Traveller, and Roma people and from individuals with lived experience relevant to our mission.

How to Apply

To apply, please submit:

  • A CV.
  • A covering letter (maximum two pages) explaining your suitability for the role and your interest in leading Travellers Times Charity
