Lead a unique community-led charity amplifying Romany, Traveller and Roma voices across the UK
The Board of Trustees of Travellers Times Charity are seeking an inspiring and entrepreneurial Managing Director to lead our charity into its next chapter.
For over 20 years, Travellers Times was published by Rural Media, and has provided a trusted platform for Romany, Traveller and Roma communities to tell their own stories, celebrate their culture and achievements, challenge stereotypes, and influence public understanding and policy. Now, the Board of Trustees of a fully independent Travellers Times Charity are looking for a dynamic leader who shares our commitment to social justice, community empowerment, and positive change and shares our commitment to ensuring that voices too often overlooked by mainstream media are heard, respected, and valued.
About the role
This is an exciting opportunity to lead a small but ambitious charity with a national profile and strong community roots.
Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the Managing Director will provide strategic leadership while remaining actively involved in the day-to-day running of the organisation. You will oversee a small staff team and network of freelance contributors, manage relationships with funders and partners, drive fundraising and organisational development, and ensure Travellers Times continues to deliver meaningful impact for the communities we serve.
This is a role for someone who enjoys combining vision with practical action and who is motivated by building sustainable, community-led organisations.
We are looking for someone who can:
- Provide inspiring and effective leadership for a small charity.
- Develop and deliver organisational strategy and growth.
- Secure funding from trusts, foundations, public bodies, and other sources.
- Build strong partnerships across communities, media, and the voluntary sector.
- Manage finances, budgets, and organisational resources effectively.
- Support a small team and freelance contributors to deliver high-quality work.
- Represent Travellers Times with confidence and credibility at local and national levels.
- Ensure the organisation remains rooted in and accountable to Romany, Traveller, and Roma communities.
Essential experience
You will bring:
- Experience of leadership or senior management within the charity, community, media, cultural, or social justice sectors.
- A strong track record of fundraising and income generation.
- Experience managing budgets and organisational finances.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
- Experience of developing partnerships and managing stakeholders.
- A commitment to equality, inclusion, and community empowerment.
- An understanding of the issues affecting Romany, Traveller, and Roma communities, or a willingness to develop this understanding quickly.
Desirable
We would particularly welcome candidates with:
- Lived experience of being from a Romany, Traveller, or Roma community.
- Experience in journalism, publishing, communications, or digital media.
- Knowledge of policy and advocacy relating to Romany, Traveller, and Roma communities.
- Experience of community-led development and participation.
Why join us?
Travellers Times is more than a publication. We are a platform for community voices, a champion of cultural heritage, and an advocate for equality and social justice.
By joining us, you will have the opportunity to:
- Shape the future of a respected national charity.
- Work directly with communities whose voices are often marginalised.
- Lead meaningful social change.
- Build partnerships and projects that create lasting impact.
- Help strengthen representation, understanding, and opportunity for Romany, Traveller, and Roma people across the UK.
Equality and Inclusion
Travellers Times is committed to creating an organisation that reflects the diversity of the communities we serve. We actively encourage applications from Romany, Traveller, and Roma people and from individuals with lived experience relevant to our mission.
