George is a documentary photographer who comes from a Hull horse-trading family which stretches back generations. Once a Rag and Bone man, he began some years ago to document his community. In 2023 George received Arts Council England funding to help him concentrate on his photography. In May 2024 he travelled with this brother Carl, a horse-trader, on Carl’s horse and cart, to Appleby Horse Fair in Cumbria.

The exhibition includes a selection of photographs taken on that journey. They show communities and families attending one of the last surviving horse fairs and a tradition which has taken place for hundreds of years.

HuFree Gallery is brand new opening in May 2025. It’s a space that showcases and celebrates the photography, film making and print that arises from working class life in the HU3 area of Hull. Here we will take a closer look, together, at the people and lives, past and present, that are often hidden or paid scant attention. We will explore too, the national and international links that reflect our beautifully diverse HU3 community, and shape who we are.
HUFree Gallery has been developed as part of the Encyclopedia of Us project (EofUs), with Hull Libraries and other local partners. EofUs has been running for over 6 years in HU3, working in collaboration with many HU3 folks. We aim to spot the unique and incredible things happening here that often go unnoticed, and that includes the rich seam of photography that is just not visible enough. We hope to change that.
