Creativity, identity and lived experience came together in a powerful celebration at The Dukes Theatre in Lancashire, as six diverse community groups unveiled original work inspired by the theme ‘Roots’.

One of the standout installations, Faces of Our Roots, was hosted in the theatre’s gallery space. Running as a drop-in exhibition throughout the afternoon, it offered an intimate and thought-provoking insight into the Traveller community. The work focused on the experiences of three generations of Traveller women, shedding light on their heritage, challenges and resilience.

Working alongside special effects make-up artist Sophie Hodgson and our colleague Sue McShane, participants created an interactive exhibition that invited visitors to engage deeply with their stories. Through striking visuals and personal narratives, the installation encouraged reflection on identity, belonging and cultural roots. It was a multi-sensory experience, with traditional foods such as Gypsy Cake and Gypsy Tart available to taste.

The collaborative project brought participants together with professional artists to explore personal and collective identity. The culmination of their work was presented in a vibrant public showcase, drawing audiences from across the community. The event highlighted not only artistic talent but also the importance of storytelling in giving voice to underrepresented groups.

For those who attended, the afternoon was not only an opportunity to experience innovative and meaningful work, but also a chance to hear stories that are too often overlooked.

As one visitor commented, the event was “a reminder of how important it is to listen to one another and celebrate where we come from.”
