Nine-year-old Romany Gypsy boy chases his dreams at his first horse how: Competing at the Sophie’s Equine Photography Special - A show raising money for local charities

Chasey-boy Smith, a nine-year-old Romany Gypsy from a small family site in Lincolnshire, has had a deep love for animals since birth.

His passion for horses was truly awakened during one of the most difficult times in his young life—the funeral of his beloved grandmother, Ryalla Duffy, and uncle Absy. With the support of his family, Chasey-boy helped drive a team of six black Friesians to their final resting place —an unforgettable moment that sparked a lifelong ambition: to become a horseman his family and community can be proud of.

On Sunday, June 29th, dressed in his best turnout, Chaseyboy competed in his first-ever horse show at the SEP Showing Special. With unwavering support from his family, his “livery yard family”—Liz Stevens, Libby Harris—and his girlfriend Fliss Faulkner, to name just a few, he entered five different classes with his stunning Palomino mare, Peach, with whom he has forged a formidable bond.

The results were nothing short of extraordinary.

Chaseyboy walked away with a total of ten ribbons: two 1st places, three 2nd places and five special awards.

Even more impressively, he and Peach qualified for two classes at the ESUK Championships at the UK Arena as part of the Sunshine Tour qualifiers. For someone so young and new to the show ring, Chaseyboy demonstrated remarkable talent. Already experienced in riding and driving, he added a new feather to his cap—competing in both in-hand and ridden classes for the first time.

He was truly thrown in at the deep end, but rose to the occasion in every way.

When asked about his experience, Chasey-boy said:

"I couldn't be happier. I was nervous because it’s not something I’ve done before. I was the only Gypsy competing and the first in my family to take this path. I’m lucky to have the support I have. I love animals and have chickens, dogs, and horses at home."
