A stunning portrait of Appleby Fair 2026 - a photo series by Guilhem Seguin
I returned once again to Appleby-in-Westmorland for the horse fair, continuing the series I began, as I mentioned in my Christmas Drive through the streets of London photo-story, published in the Travellers Times.
As a street photographer, I naturally seek to capture those fleeting moments of everyday life. At the same time, I also aim to make portraits that offer a different perspective on the Traveller community, whether among Romany Gypsies or Irish Travellers.
This year, I wanted to engage more with people rather than simply observe them. I was fortunate to meet again several individuals I had encountered at previous editions, and it was a genuine pleasure to see them. Some of them shared particularly warm and memorable moments with me on Flashing Lane—moments that stay with you long after they have passed. My sincere thanks to them.
My thanks also go to Nico McCaffrey for inviting me to spend time around the campfire, surrounded by music—an atmosphere that resonates deeply with me as a musician myself—and for introducing me to many other people.
The journey will continue at the Ballinasloe Horse Fair, and perhaps beyond. One thing is certain: I will return to the Appleby Fair next year, hoping to be even more open and receptive to everything that unfolds there and to the connections it inspires.
My thanks once again to fellow photographer Eszter Halasi for her generosity in sharing information and for our many conversations.
