‘Mis[s]understood’ – a photo book by Michele Zousmer

A visit to Ballinasloe horse fair and a chance meeting led to Photographer Michele Zousmer creating a photographic story – and now a book – that follows the lives of Irish Traveller women living in Ireland. Take a look at a selection of Michele’s amazing photographs below.

My book MIS[S]UNDERSTOOD offers a rare and intimate glimpse into the often-misunderstood world of the Irish Traveller community … (writes Michelle Zousmer).

With deep respect and empathy, I have chosen to focus on the lives of women whose beauty, style, strength, and resilience call for a deeper understanding, recognizing that, in the most meaningful ways, we are all the same.

My images, paired with quotes from Irish Traveller women, reveal a longing for a brighter future for their children, navigating their faith, and the emotional hardships of seeking acceptance in a world where they are discriminated against both socially and politically.
Maria (below) has lived her whole life in this caravan. She and her husband raised 12 children and now, years later, she is witnessing their lives still full of challenges Many halting sites still have no electricity, running water and proper bathrooms. Education is inferior, employment difficult to obtain. Many young men are choosing to leave Ireland with their brides to start a new life in another English-speaking country. Many mothers are heartbroken over this.

In all their glamour, the Irish Traveller women insist on dignity and respect, redefining what it means to be an Irish Traveller woman in this modern world. "
