The Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service (EMTAS) is a team of dedicated teachers and bilingual specialist staff with significant experience of working with schools, community groups and other partners. We work to support schools in raising the attainment of Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) and Gypsy, Roma and Travellers (GRT) pupils, including refugee and asylum seeker pupils. We can provide consultancy to Senior Management in schools, training for staff and governors as well as support for BME/GRT pupils and home-school liaison in various languages. The team works with pupils and teachers in schools throughout Gateshead to counter racism and promote tolerance and understanding between all groups in the community.
Our purpose
To raise the attainment of BME and GRT pupils and those at risk of under achievement and attainment including refugee/asylum seekers children and children learning English as an additional language (EAL).
To promote inclusion and curricular access, raise awareness and celebrate linguistic, cultural and religious diversity
To build mainstream capacity to provide access and raise the attainment of BME and GRT pupils.
To enable young people and families to enjoy a smooth induction and transition to schools and education systems.
To promote the active participation of children, young people and families.
