Gypsy Roma and Traveller Women's Health Group

25 January 2023

A group of Gypsy Roma and Traveller women from Surrey Gypsy Traveller Community Forum have launched a Gypsy Roma and Traveller Women's Health Group.

Founded by Dee Cooper the community group meets online and is open to all Gypsy Roma or Traveller women in the UK. “It’s a friendly group and one where every voice matters, making sure women are getting the support they need in terms of their healthcare”, said Dee.

Lisa Gavin’s team who are all specialist trained NHS nurses are already working with Gypsy, Roma, Traveller Families based in Surrey, however this group is open to Gypsy Roma and Traveller women across the UK living roadside or in settled accommodation

The network can support Gypsy Roma and Traveller Women to

- Get help registering with a GP

- Get help to arrange a GP appointment

- Access to Midwives

- Advise on getting the right support

"This is a community led group" Dee, told Travellers Times "I think eventually it will be a positive move forward in terms of women’s health - but along the way we will be able to help men’s health and children too. For now, it’s all about building trust and getting those much-needed appointments and conversations going” at our first meeting in October- one woman left saying she “felt heard” after sharing her lived experience. Others had appointments booked for them that were long overdue.

Lisa’s Team can offer health and well-being advice to all from Gypsy Roma, Traveller Communities.

The next online meeting is Thursday January 26th at 1.00pm -Topic General health and well-being.  see poster below for details and to register for Link.
