Job Opportunity - Travellers' Times seeks new editor

30 September 2015

Travellers Times Editor

The Rural Media Company is an award winning organisation that has built a national reputation for high quality arts and media projects aimed at strengthening both rural and disadvantaged communities. We are funded by the National Lottery through the Big Lottery Fund to sustain and further develop Travellers’ Times and deliver a linked media skills workshop programme.

Damian Le Bas has been in post as the Editor of Travellers’ Times magazine and website since 2011, however, after the Nov issue of the magazine goes to press he will be reducing his hours on the project to enable him to devote more time to his writing career, which will include a poetry residency at the University of Essex. We are delighted that we will still be working closely with Damian who will continue to work with the team as a consultant to the project. We will be starting the recruitment process for a new editor later this week. In the meantime Charles, Lucy and I will still be working on the Travellers’ Time project and will keep you all up to date the latest news.

So….We are looking for an Editor, who will be the national champion and advocate for our well established Travellers’ Times print and online magazine.

The Editor will keep abreast of developments within Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (GRT) communities in the UK, the Republic of Ireland and the EU, writing and commissioning news and features, and taking an editorial overview of all web and print content.

This is a role that requires identifying major themes, trends and breaking stories, developing stakeholder relationships, managing a diverse range of professional and community contributors, and supporting the future growth and sustainability of the Travellers’ Times portfolio.

The Editor will care deeply about the message at all times, overseeing all content and the traffic that Travellers Times generates to determine what the various audiences / readers are interested in, and creating or soliciting content to fill that need.

In all aspects of the role, the Editor will uphold and deliver the highest standards of professional journalistic practice, acting at all times with integrity, fairness and sensitivity.

Salary: £29,236 – £31,160. Pro-rata minimum of 2 days per week.
