MASCG for Appleby Fair- Stopping places on route to Appleby

There have been a few changes this year at some stopping places traditionally used on the journey to and from Appleby Fair. Sandford Road End is now no longer available. However there are plenty of other areas to stay, and  facilities are available at some of the larger, more popular traditional stopping places including  Watty Yat at Mallerstang and Cote Moor, Fell End.

It is important to all of the local communities that people travelling to the fair respect the restrictions that are in place. If travelling by motorised vehicle please do not set off too early, this helps to ensure that those travelling by horse and bow top have suitable and sufficient stopping places available to them strategically located throughout their journey. At some locations provision is restricted to bow tops only, with grazing and a safe area being provided to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the horses.

In Melmerby Village, a very popular bow top stopping point, additional grazing for horses has been kindly identified by the local landowner, with the restricted areas being fenced off.

At Tyne Willows, Alston, bowtops are welcome, with the area previously available for motorised vehicles being reduced to ensure that bowtops have priority. Horses can graze on the school fields, but please secure them around the edges and do not allow them to stray onto the pitches or running tracks. The field at Black House Farm, just outside Alston heading towards Melmerby is available as usual and provides accommodation for motorised vehicles and bow tops.

Further details regarding  provisions and restrictions can be found at http://www.applebyfair.org/travellers/stopping-places

A vast amount of work with the local community and representatives from the Gypsies and Traveller community takes place throughout the year to ensure that there are sufficient facilities for those travelling to the fair. We ask that these areas are respected by picking up rubbish and putting it in bins provided. By working together we can help to make improvements for future years and generations visiting the fair.

Bow tops will be able to arrive on Wednesday 4th June from 5 pm to enter Fair Hill. Strictly no motorised vehicles are allowed until the Thursday morning, so please do not attempt to enter because you will be turned away.

The field previously opened by Mr Dawson adjacent to Fair Hill is not being opened for general use this year. There is plenty of room on Fair Hill, with a vast amount of space and grazing being available.

Motorised vehicles are allowed on the sites at Appleby from Thursday morning and we ask that people have consideration at this time which can become very busy in the local area. Try to space out your arrival and reduce traffic congestion.

By working together we can help to make improvements for future years and generations visiting the fair.
