Hey, Romale, Ashunen: Maternity Support (video in Romanes with English subtitles)

A new video giving advice on maternity support and services for UK Roma in the Romanes Language has been released by the Roma Voice Centre.

The video, available on You Tube, is subtitled in English – so is useful advice for native English speakers as well.

A spokesperson from the Roma Voice Centre said:

“In our experience of working with the Roma community, we (Roma Voice Centre) realised that Roma women are more vulnerable than men - for different reasons:

  • patriarchal views of traditional communities
  • discouragement to pursue education
  • early marriages and family duties ahead of time

However, many Roma migrant women do not speak (at all or partially) English, which marginalises them from obtaining pivotal information on pregnancy, women's health, maternity - those are topics that are unexplored by majority of Roma women.

Roma Voice Centre created this video in Romanes to inform the women of what support is available when they expect a baby.”

This video is realised by the Roma Voice Centre in partnership with Ipswich Community Media and AndoGlasso, with the support of The National Lottery Fund. Thanks to contributions of all participants: Rachel Heathcock, Crina Morteanu, Monika Puchala and Romeo Mustata. A special gratitute goes to AndoGlasso Collective who generously permitted us to use their signature song in this series of films.
