Travellers' Times Big Creative Writing & Poetry Competition

Gypsy, Roma and Travellers are well known for their strong oral tradition of story telling.

This talent has been passed down through generations as a means to preserve ancient languages and knowledge about the rich and vibrant history of our people.

To mark Gypsy, Roma Traveller history month in June we want to show case  this  talent amongst young people from these communities across the UK.

So we invite you to put your pen to paper and write an original tale or poem on the theme of ‘Home’ in 500 words or fewer, and submit it by post or email.

Scottish Traveller and award winning author Jess Smith will choose the winning story!


If you win, your story or poem will be published in The Travellers’ Times November Magazine and will be read by a readership of over 100,000 people - and you will get a £50 book voucher!

We will also award a second prize of a £25 and a third prize of £10 in book vouchers.


How do I enter?

 To enter you need to write an original story or poem that is no more than 500 words long. Once you have written your story, you can enter it into the competition by emailing it to our Youth Editor at

Please remember to include your age, name and address, so we can contact you if we need to.

8 years old to 12 years old

13 years old to 16 years old

How are the stories marked?

The judging will be done by an independent panel and five finalists will be selected

to be put forward for judging by award winning Author Jess Smith.


When is the competition open?

The competition opens 26th March 2018 and closes on June 10th 2018


Is there a minimum word limit?

Stories can be 500 Words or under. There is no minimum word limit, however the more you write, the more content our judges have to mark!


I've sent in my story - when will I hear back?

Do you the high volume of entries expected, it will not be possible to provide individual feedback and those who have not been shortlisted will not be notified.
